A New Chapter in Pakistan’s Civil-Military Relations? The Army Chief’s Sharp Focus on ‘Economy

The role of the military in Pakistan’s politics has always been a subject of intense discussion. But recently, the public statements of Army Chief General Asim Munir have sparked a new debate. At several forums, he has repeatedly made statements emphasizing that “Pakistan’s biggest fight is against economic instability.”

Does this signal a shift in the military’s focus?

According to analysts, this could be a calculated strategy. Pakistan is currently grappling with a severe economic crisis, with sky-high inflation and foreign exchange reserves at worrying lows. In this context, the military’s new stance sends several messages:

  • Public Endorsement: It acts as a public endorsement of the incumbent Shehbaz Sharif government’s economic reform efforts.
  • A Signal of Stability: The military wants to signal to the country and international investors that there is stability and that all institutions are working together for economic recovery.
  • New Priorities: It is an attempt to project a new, economy-focused image, moving away from older agendas.

However, the fundamental question remains: is this merely a public relations exercise, or is the focus of Pakistan’s power center permanently shifting? The coming economic decisions, and the military’s reaction to them, will provide the answer.
